This restaurant is on the cusp of being a four-star, but just lets itself down.

No soap in the toilets, wild variations in spicing, excess ghee, below-average breads, and no desserts of interest are the worst offenders. Strategic pricing - expensive starters (they charge an extra £1.00 for the pickles and sauces if you order popadoms), expensive breads, but reasonably priced main dishes - are perhaps just an irritation.

The onion bhajis looked very fine and came with a decent salad garnish. They were fresh with good onion flavour, but little spiciness - like the accompanying turmeric-yellow dip. The waiter hinted too late that this might be changed - though I don't see how, as I always assumed food of this kind was prepared in advance.

Some late negotiation over curry hotness caused panic in the kitchen with the result that the vegetable madras came in above vindaloo hot. It was otherwise a good dish with plenty of variety. The other dishes were on target. My chicken dopiaza (ordered madras hot at the outset) would have been excellent - good-quality chicken and plenty of onions with the flavour coming through - had it not suffered (as did I later that night) from an excess of ghee. The prawn curry was flavoursome, if a little sloppy. All the portions were generous. The saag paneer side dish was delightful - delicately spiced with lots of spinach flavour. Shame about the breads. JD was particularly disappointed with his keema nan - always a high-risk item. This one had plenty of lamb, but was stodgy.

The service was good, considering they were quite busy for early week with a large party. (The nearby Everest, same night, was totally empty. Rumbled! I think.)
